DISASTER IN THE MOUNTAINS

It is hard to explain just how much the North Carolina Christmas tree community is just that, a community. Since I began this journey over 10 years ago I have had the pleasure of meeting so many members of this tribe! When you go for a visit, they welcome you in well with, “My house is your house. What can I do to make your visit better?” This type of energy permeates from the local shops to the people, all the way around.

True story, on one trip, I was kidnapped by one of the farm owners, hauled to a remote location with no cell service, and, well, a BBQ broke out! Farmers from all over had gathered to hang, and even being the outsider from Texas, everyone seemed like friends I’ve known for years.

Hurricane Helene has left the area an absolute disaster! Downed trees, road washouts, mudslides, you name it! Power will be out for days, possibly many weeks most likely. No power means no water wells are working. The first message I got from one of our farms was rather scary. “Current status, trying to cut our way out of the house.” Rude awakening to say the least!

Here in Texas, honestly it’s kind of “stuck on the outside watching”. Seeing all the posts in the disaster group of a family trying to reach & check on the family are heart wrenching moments!   When these kinds of emergencies come up, everyone just wants to help. But from here financial support seems the best and only way at this time. There are tons of national agencies responding to help.

On ground zero we have identified an organization that has already sprung into action. Getting food and basic needs organized and to the people that need it the most. Ashe Food Pantry (https://www.facebook.com/AsheFoodPantry)  and its volunteers & support network jumped into action. Not just for people that could get to them; they sent their mobile van out to others.

They haven’t stopped there! They also have begun making food boxes available to the Ashe County Emergency Management for home delivery or for their distribution. There are so many families not able to get off their mountain homesteads to get to needed resources. Some are only able to get supplies to them via air drops.

Last week, I sent funds already raised this year ($750) for HOPE For Christmas - Hunger Program to Ashe Food Pantry. Funds were sent electronically so they could continue to source food & basic need items & get them to the people that need them right now. Well we do not want to stop there! We will match the next $1,000 raised for our hunger campaign..

These families, for the last 10 years, are the community that helps make sure Christmas happens for us. This year many will have their own struggles not just to make sure Christmas trees happen for us, but for their own families. Some have watched their homes be destroyed, but are in it to help as one community. This is the least we can do to help them.

Our Christmas tree pre-order continues, trees have been moving fast and at this time we don’t expect any changes in the trees available, but farms have not been able to get into the fields and check for damage. Honestly it’s not the priority at the moment, and unsafe to do so.
